Astigmatism: How An Irregularly Curved Cornea Can Be A Leading Factor


Out of the five senses that a human has, the most prominent one is eyesight. An individual receives up to 80% of all sensory information through the eyes; therefore, it is given more priority than others. What is astigmatism?

The condition’s prevalence is estimated to be one in three people worldwide. It typically occurs with other issues such as nearsightedness. 

It is also considered hereditary; therefore, if a parent has this condition, then there is a significant chance that their children may inherit the flaw. However, this is only true for conditions that have a biological cause. If a person develops this due to other factors such as accidents, their children will not be at risk. 

What role does an irregularly curved cornea have?

The primary factor that leads to this condition is an irregularly curved cornea. The cornea is located at the outermost part of the eye. It controls and directs the entry of light into the retina, then sends the information in the form of signals to the brain through the optic nerve, where it will be converted to eyesight. The cornea is responsible for 65% to 75% of the eye’s complete focusing power.

To accurately refract the light to the retina, the cornea needs to be perfectly round. However, suppose there is an error in the curvature of the cornea. In that case, it can prevent the light from properly focusing on one spot. Instead, the light will be directed at two or more areas. Therefore, when these different signals are sent to the brain, it sees the erroneous information as distorted or unclear images. 

The flawed curvature is typically present at birth; however, it can occur later on in a person’s life if there is an injury or trauma to the eye.

What are the other factors?

While irregularities in the cornea can commonly cause the condition, issues affecting the shape of the lens can also play a role. Sometimes a person may display errors in both. An eye doctor can identify which factor may be responsible through specific tests and examinations. 

Based on which factor is responsible, a person can receive the correct treatment to restore vision. For example, corrective lenses can temporarily restore vision, while for a more permanent solution, laser surgeries can be used.
